The Daily Rant

We had a critique last night. It took a very long time (the entire three hours). Based upon some comments during the critique I believe that I may be underestimating my abilities at this point. I'm thinking that for one to paint with authority one must first learn how to paint correctly, and I just don't see that happening in two or three semesters. The way I see it, to learn how to paint one must first work in the representational, otherwise one simply has no criteria or reference point to critically assess progress and determine weakness or strength. Once the decision is made to work in the representational a simple well designed arrangement facilitates one's objective and affords the possibility of a pleasing painting, hopefully avoiding a bad painting through careful planning and refinement.
